Our Story

Just like you, we own a guesthouse!

We built it from scratch and learnt a lot in the process. It is like no other business that we have run and we have started a few! It has been an interesting journey.

We love to travel – a lot!! But we have limited resources. You may feel this too?

Its hard to validate spending money on holiday accommodation, when you are worried about profits, especially during low season.

Another thing that we have noticed, is that it is hard to find cool places to stay. We realised that there is not a website that fulfils all our needs.

So we created it!

As Guesthouse Owners, Travellers and Entrepreneurs, together with our 3 kids and a dog, we have brainstormed and developed the business that we present to you today.

This is our Confession

This entire business is to fulfil our own selfish needs. 😊

The need to travel extensively, with out spending fortunes. And now you get to do the same.

Shane and I first went travelling in our early twenties. We backpacked around Europe for nearly a year, and that’s when the travel bug first bit us.

Travel has always been one of our biggest desires, but somehow, we just don’t get to do it as often as we would like.

Fast forward 17 homes later, (yes, we are not called the Gypsies for nothing!) and many years, now today we find ourselves living in the scenic tourist town of Clarens in the Eastern Free State, running a guesthouse and developing a Membership Club to make travelling easier and cheaper for the traveller, and it is just as beneficial for the guesthouse owner, the Entrepreneur.

The Inspiration

We remember the moment when we saw that tiny picture of the Gypsy Wagon on Pinterest.

We had no idea that the humble little image would change the trajectory of our lives in such a dramatic way.

We naively jumped in… And struggled. Sound Familiar?

There was no support. No book, no course, no community to turn to for help. We had to figure it all out on our own. Some expensive mistakes were made.

Quickly we learnt that we needed a social media presence, if we were to create awareness and increase bookings. It was not enough simply to be listed on the booking sites.

Over the last 6 years we have built our guesthouse business into a very successful venue, that we are proud to say, is fast becoming a bucket list destination.

We attract a very specific and amazing type of guest. We get loads of return guests.

Automated upsells, combined with the fact that we no longer loose 18% of our income to booking portal fees, has had a dramatic, positive effect on our profit margins!

We have grown our Facebook followers from 4k to 17k in the last year. Engagement on our page has increased our direct bookings to nearly 80% of our income.

We have built online automated systems to stream line our processes, which allows us more flexibility to customize the guest experience.
